A STRANGE REQUEST

FISHERMEN’S DIFFICULTY INVASION OF GIANT CRABS. MELBOURNE, June 8. (Received June 8, at 11.5 p.m.) The fishermen at Corner' Inlet, Southern Gippsland, • have made a strange request to the Government. They declare that their livelihood is jeopardised by an invasion of giant crabs, some of which are two feet across, which abound in the local fishing waters. The crabs, which' are a light strawberry and closely resemble the giant Japanese variety, can be seen two to three feet thick on the seabed. At least 22 miles of them are also swarming near Wilson’s Promontory. The fishermen are asking the Government for launches to haul heavy rollers over the seabed in order to crush tliem.
