It is estimated by a prominent Chinese in Auckland that the Chinese in New Zealand have voluntarily subscribed between £6OOO and £7OOO in small sums to help China in the war against Japan. Ho said very large,'sums had been forwarded from Manila, Honolulu, * and the United States. WELLINGTON, June 8. As the result of police raids yesterday eight Europeans were each fined £3 and costs (10s) to-day for being unlawfully on premises used as common gaming houses. The charges against nine Chinese were remanded on the application of the appearing counsel, who said he had not had time to go fully into the matter. His Honor, Mr Justice MacGregor, sentenced prisoners to-day as follows: Claude Frederick Mallard, breaking and entering and theft, convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years and to pay the costs of the prosecution; Martin Carr, breaking and entering and theft, 18 months’ imprisonment; John Laine, indecent assault on a male (four charges), tw® years’ hard labour; Albert Durant, breaking and entering and theft, 18 months’ imprisonment.
