UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
SUBURBAN ALLOCATIONS MINISTER TO VISIT DUNEDIN Mr .A. E. Ansell, M.P., lias been endeavouring to have an increased allocation provided for relief workers at Port Chalmers and Green Island. In reply to a telegram forwarded to Mr Adam Hamilton, Minister of Employment, the Minister says:—“lt is not possible to extend the city allocation to Port Chalmers and Green Island. It is my intention to visit Dunedin some time this month, probably towards the end, and I shall be prepared to discuss the matter with you and representatives of. those centres.” On the receipt of definite information of the date of the Minister’s visit Mr Ansell will notify the interested parties. LOCAL ACTIVITIES GROUPS TO REPORT Groups 603, 604, and .703 will report at 8 a.m. to-day at the Opoho Football Ground for work under the D.C.C. Reserves Department. GARDEN CULTIVATION The Unemployment Board has notified that all relief workers must again be reminded that they must cultivate a garden for the production 6f vegetables. Preparatory work A this season of the years is necessary if the best results are to be obtained in the production season. The board confirms the principle that any relief worker who is not making reasonable efforts with' all view to producing his own vegetables in the proper season is to be denied relief until he complies with this requirement. No. 2 DEPOT ‘ The monthly meeting of the committee of the No. 2 Depot was held on Tuesday evening. The depot is open on Tuesday and Friday mornings for the sale of clothing, boots, wood, and coal, and on Friday afternoon for receipts of payments and sale of wood and coal. The treasurer reported increased sales for the month. CONCERT AT ST. KILDA
There was a disappointing attendance at the concert given in the Coronation Hall, St. Kilda, on Wednesday night by the Orkney and Shetland, Choir in aid of the funds of the St. Kilda Unemployed Association. Items were given by the choir, and songs were sung by Misses Olive Kennedy, "Lovaine M’Donald,Messrs Harry Oates, W. Johnston, and D. Bennett. Misses Margaret Laing,and Peggy Harvey sang a duet, and later in the evening Misses E. and J. Ritchie were also heard in a duet. There were two recitations by Misses N. Moffett and Nan M‘Kce and dances were given by Master George Reilly and Miss Hastings. The programme! was completed by a banj’o solo, by Mr Desmond Neilson and a violin solo by Miss' D. Stuart. The accompaniments* were played by Miss Ruby Baxter. LAKE ELLESMERE DRAINAGE • PROPOSAL TO SPEND £82,000. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. A proposal to expend £82,000 in providing permanent drainage for Lake Ellesmere was approved by the executive of the Canterbury Progress League. The estimates provide for £41,000 to be spent on labour and a similar amount on material. The chairman said there was little doubt but the Unemployment Board would give approval to the scheme. DISTRIBUTION OF FOOTWEAR STRONG PROTEST BY RETAILERS (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 8. The policy of the Unemployment Board in purchasing direct from the manufacturers footwear for distribution to unemployed workers and their dependents was fully discussed at a meeting of the Wellington Drapers, Clothiers, Mercers, and Boot Retailers’ Association. The following resolution was carried:— “ That we strongly protest against any fnthcr attempts at Government interfetence in business, and view the action of the Unemployment Board in letting contracts for boots as a serious menace to retail traders; and that this meeting registers its strong disapproval of any extension of this principle.” The Minister and the chairman of the Unemployment Board are being approached on the matter.
