PALMERSTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, May 16. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Athenaeum Committee was held last night, with Mr W. H. Hopkins in the chair. Accounts amounting to £2 11s 2d were passed for payment. The_ secretary was instructed to obtain a list of books (fiction), the list to be presented to the Selection Committee, which was given power to act. The committee was strongly in favour of more books being added to those on the shelves for winter reading. Thirty-nine new books were put into circulation, leaving none in reserve. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The first meeting of the new Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) and Crs Warren, Thomas, M'Gregor, Thomson, Gordon, Haggle, and Earley. The Mayor referred to the accident which had 'befallen the ex-foreman for the council (Mr W. Dreaver) and his wile and brother, and proposed that a letter of sympathy should be sent to the family. —Carried. , „ , , Crs Haggle (chairman), Gordon, and Earley were appointed as the Picture Committee. Cr Thomson will take Or Gordon’s place on tho Reserves Committee, and Cr Warren will take Or Haggles place on the Health Committee. The secretary of the Palmerston Bow - ing Club advised that the footpath leading from both roads to the Bowling Club pavilion required repairing. It was decided to support the Manuka u County Council in its endeavour to take some steps with the object ot * the Government to remedy the existing conditions for collecting rates. An offer of a truck of crushed limestone from Dunback lime kilns tor experimental work on the streets was accepted with thanks. The Works Committee was instructed to try the limestone on a certain part of a street. Accounts amounting to £lB- 3s 7d were passed for payment. The chairman of the Water Committee reported that it was evident that a nguic wheel on the school meter bad been accidentally turned on when it had been ic-
moved for examination. He therefore moved that a disputed account should be revised.—Carried. The Water Committee was empowered to have several of the water meters tested. The Picture Committee reported a satisfactory credit balance for pictures shown since last meeting. It was decided to hold over two applications for the showing of pictures till the August meeting. The Mayor and Crs Earley, Thomson, and M'Gregor were apppoinfed to represent the council on the Unemployment Committee. It was decided that a request should be made to the Postmaster-general to have the old Post Office painted.
