ELLIS CUP COMPETITION CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AND PACIFIC LEVEL Christian Brothers ami City were very evenly matched when the teams met on the Oval on Saturday afternoon. ■ In the first half the game lacked the fast, open movements which are usually seen, when these teams come together. In the second spell, however, both sides played a faster and more interesting game. City led by six points to nil at half time, but the Greens scored 10 points in the. second ' Pacific and Athletic met on Chisholm Park, the former securing an easy win. Pacific’s win was due to the superior combination and bright movements by the backs. The Athletic forwards held their own in the loose play. The teams were:— . Christian Brothers. —F. Culling, Hicks, T. O’Connor, A. Culling, J. O’Connor, M'Namara, M'Kewen, B. O’Connor, Parsons, Lemon, Gibb, Schmelz, J. Hill. City—Hayden, Richards, Ravcnwood, Nelson, Watts, Williams, Cinders, Bartholomew, F. Heller, W. Heller, N. Barbara, W. Barbara, Hopcroft. In the opening stages the Green backs were'prominent in several good passing movements, and City’s line was frequently in. danger. City then secured the ball from a scrum. It was sent bn to N. Barbara, who cut through and then transferred to Cinders, who scored an easy try. N. Barbara failed with the kick. The Greens had City on the defence after this reverse, but the City backs again broke away, the ball passing from man to man. It finally came out to Cinders, who scored a fine try, which N. Barbara failed to convert from a wide angle. The Greens attacked with determination, but could not break through City’s .defence. At half time play was in the Greens’ territory. The Greens commenced the second spell with more energy and- held the advantage for some time. There was some hard play near City’s line, where T. O’Connor secured possession and went over to score a fine try, which was converted by B. O’Connor, placing the Greens one point behind their opponents. The backs of both sides were seen in some bright movements, and play was transferred to City’s line, where B, O’Connor placed the Greens in the lead by kicking a goal from a penalty. City invaded their opponents’ territory, but play was soon returned to the other end. In a scramble near the corner Hicks secured possession and pushed his way over for a good try, which B. O’Connor failed to convert. Cinders was prominent in another City attack, but play returned to the other end, and the Greens had City on the defence when time was called. The final scores were:— Christian Brothers .. 10 points. City C points. Mr B. Eekhoff was referee. PACIFIC v, ATHLETIC The teams were:— l Pacific.—M'Lennan, Blackwood, Reid, de Courcey, Steffans, Bryan, Milligan, Aston, Ryan, Pearce, Mason, Sims, and M'lndoe. Athletic.—M'Donald, Gardiner, Loades, Anderson. Gray, Munro, Tobin; Lawless, Martin, J. Duncan, R. Duncan, M'Cormack, and Stewart. Athletic attacked after the kick-oif, but Pacific quickly gained the upper hand. Shortly after the game started M’Lennun opened Pacific’s score by kicldim a penalty goal. A few minutes later Steffans followed up fast and scored a good try, which was converted by M'Lennau. Athletic again attacked, but the Reds quickly, regained the lost ground, and a passing movement ended in Blackwood scoring a try which M'Lennan converted. Athletic rallied, and the backs indulged in passing, the first score for the side coming when Loades kicked a penalty goal. Pacific again swept down the field, and tries were registered in quick succession by Milligan, Pearce, and de Courcey, the kick at goal being missed in each case by M'Lennan. A few minutes before half time Milligan scored again, but'the kick at goal failed. Pacific 24 points, Athletic 2 points. In the opening stages of the second spell it was seen that the Athletic defence had greatly improved, and for a time play was mostly confined to loose rucking. Athletic then attacked, and twice Pacific had to force. Reid made a fast run for Pacific, but later suffered an ankle injury and had to leave the field. Athletic set up a strong attack, and Tobin scored under the posts, Loades being successful with the kick. Just before the call of time Bryan made an opening for Steffans to score.
