FIRES

ELEVEN-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, May 13. An 11-roomed house in the Sheridan estate was destroyed by fire this morning. The premises had been tenanted by the late Mr P. H. Harper, S.M., and had been unoccupied since his departure for Christchurch. The building was insured for £6OO, and Mr Harper’s furniture and other contents (including war souvenirs and Maori curios), for £550. LOCAL CALLS At 0.30 on Saturday evening the Roslyn Fire Brigade answered a malicious false alarm from the corner of County road and Begg street, and at 9.49 the City Brigade turned out to a chimney fire in King Edward street. No damage was done. Shortly before mid-day yesterday the City Brigade was again summoned, this time to a five-roomed cottage in Clyde street, owned and occupied by Mr E. Davys. Some damage was done to the roof and the contents of the house were affected by water. The cause of the outbreak was a defective vent on a gas copper. The house was insured in the A.P.A. office for £I2OO, and the contents in the Victoria office for £4OO. A further call was received to Tweed street in the evening where a chimney lire required attention. No damage was done.
