"LEST WE FORGET"

IX) THE GUITOU.

Sir,—Now that the turmoil of the election is over and all the hatchets are buried, and one can think calmly in retrospect, I venture to make a suggestion which, 1 believe, will meet with the approbation of a very large majority of the citizens of Dunedin, and that is that some tangible token of the thanks and respect of Dunedin should be made to the exMayoress, Mrs R. S. Black, for her wonderful humanitarian work during the time of her husband's mayoralty. There are many hundreds of people in the city to-day who should, and do, I feel sure, offer up their thanks to God that such a wonderful woman as Mrs Black occupied the position of Mayoress of this city during the trying time of the past four years. I have not the pleasure of the acquaintance of the exMayoress, but during my peregrinations through the city in the course of my work I hear wonderful tributes to, and have evidence as to, her kindness and large heartedness, and it is only fitting that the citizens of Dunedin should have an opportunity of expressing to that lady in some tangible form, however small, their sincere appreciation. Perhaps someone more prominent in public life than myself will accept this respectful suggestion and get busy, and I. personally, will consider it an honour to be associated with any committee shat may be set up should my services be deemed desirable.—l am, etc., S. B. MACDONALD. Liverpool street, May 11.
