SWEEP ON GRAND NATIONAL
RESULTS TO DATE NEW ZEALAND NAMES. (From Otjb Own Cobbespondent.) LONDON, March 23. For the Irish Sweepstake on the Grand National—the draw for which is in progress in Dublin —the prize fund amounts to £1,986,731—a drop of £304,988 compared with last year's Grand National. The total proceeds of the sweep reached £3,101,321. The prize fund was divisible into 19 units of £IOO,OOO each, with a balance of £86,731. Each unit was subdivided as follows: — Drawer of winning horse, £30,000. Drawer of second horse, £15,000. Drawer of third horse, £IO,OOO. The names of 56 horses were in the crystal drum. The drawers of 53 other horses receive' £660 7s 6d, and there are 1900 cash prizes of £IOO each. The balance of £86,731 is divisible into 10 residual awards of £8673 each. The total prize fund since the inception of the sweepstake, it was officially announced, had reached £15,097,644, and the total sum which had gone to the hospitals would amount to £4,762,000. Results so far available show that out of the total of 1064 tickets for horses, 252 are held in London and the Home counties. The rest of England have 330, Ireland 78, Scotland 58, and Wales 25. Outside Great Britain the most lucky country was the United States, which had a total of 150. Other tickets were distributed as follows: —Canada 31, Holland 24, India 24, Africa 22, France 21, Australia 10, South America 6, Egypt 7, China 6, New Zealand 4. Lucky tickets were held in Germany, Belgium, Poland, Italy, Switzerland, Persia, Channel Islands, Madeira, the East and West Indies, the Straits Settlements, Mauritius, and Manchuria. , New Zealanders who drew horses were: A. S. Fagg, 60 Lower Cuba street, Wellington—Southern Hero. Dunrobin," 84 Church street, Onehunga—Quite Calm (non-runner). Jenkins, 25 Stratford street, Christchurch —Cold Punch (non-runner). "The Unlucky Syndicate," care Joe Black, Christchurch Hospital—For bra (last year's winner of the big race). . BRITAIN'S LUCK. " Sure, and it's more like an Englisii ■weepstake than an Irish," commented a disconsolate Irishman, who was present at the drawing of the horses, at which interval 125 prizes had gone to London and the Home Counties, 156 to the provinces, 37 to Ireland, 28 to Scotland, 15 to Wales, 60 to the United States of America, 12 to France, and 11 to Holland; A ticket holder with the non de plume "Homeless" drew a horse called Ruin; while "Hope" and "Hoping" drew Aspiration. One fortunate man, a road sweeper, dropped his broom in amazement. He •was at work near his home when told that he had drawn Delaneige. The broom iell to the ground. "What did you say?" he asked. The statement was repeated, and Mr Jones then said: "Yours is the pleasantest com; paav I have had for many an afternoon.' Asked what he would do if the horse won, Mr Jones looked at his dustcart and broom and 6aid: "I shall drop this for a start, and take up some more congenial occupation." , " Ten Bonnets," of Headmgton, Oxfordshire, which was on a ticket drawing Apostasy, represents a syndicate of 10 men employed at Messrs Morris's Motor Works at Cowley. One of the 10 said: "We chose that pen-name because our work is rubbing down the bonnets, ami there are 10 of us on the job. We had 10 tickets between us." Mr E. Davey, a butcher of New Southgate, who has drawn Coup de Chapeau, dreamt that he was in a tropical bath surrounded by palm trees. "If my horse •wins," he said, "I mean to have a cruise, and every one of my customers will have a free joint of meat."
