BARRIER TO PROSPERITY DEMANDS FOR REDUCTION. LONDON, May 7. The Sunday Express describes the Suez Canal as one of the greatest barriers to Empire prosperity. It says that the British Treasury has persistently failed to support the shipowners' demands for a reduction in the tolls. Fifty-six per cent, of the shipping using the "canal is British and 0 per cent. French, yet France holds the balance of power. The only hope of a reduction is that the British Government will appeal to Egypt, which is empowered to call an international conference on the subject.
