Yet every boy or girl who lias come to Ashburton from a conventional private school has turned out to be about two years behind its standard o f work. Mr Stone, the headmaster, thus describes his methods. “ The reason our standard is high is that we make our lessons interesting and keep them short and varied. The boys and girls are taught to understand one another and to know one another’s failing" with no false glamour. The elder boys, who take the year’s cooking course, have made a great success of it, ami they are just as quick to pick up the essentials as girls. Then we encourage a love of music and other arts. But we have plenty of discipline, too. We achieve that by keeping the children busy.” The school has its own garden, looked after by the hoys, and a kitchen with gas and electric cooking stoves and irons. There is even a cradle with a life-size doll—so thal the girl may practise “baby-craft.” There are needlework classes for the girls and chemistry and woodcarving for the boys. The school has 320 pupils.
