The fifteenth century oJnirch of All Saints’ at Elton, Northamptonshire, has to he regularly watered to prevent it falling down The church is built on a bed of clay which is shrinking, and in average dry weather the fire brigade from Elton estate gets out its hoses and pours water on to the foundations for 28 hours weekly. Cranks in the masonry indicate what would happen if this were not done. So long as its foundations are wet, the building is safe.
