MANCHESTER UNITY
The Loyal Caversham Lodge held a well-attended meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall, Forbury Corner, on Wednesday evening, when N.G. Bro. A. Dixon presided. Some time ago the lodge paid a visit to. the' Loyal Oamaru Lodge, and correspondence included a letter from Oamaru advising that at its next meeting the Oamaru Lodge would arrange a date for a return visit to Dunedin. After disposing of business matters the lodge adjourned to receive visitors from the Unity (1.0.0. F.) Lodge. The two lodges meet twice annually iu friendly contest for the card shield, and the matches are always keenly contested. On this occasion the Unity brethren proved victorious by 29 games to 24. On behalf of the Caversham Lodge, P.P.G.M. Bro. Black presented the shield to the winners, P.G. Bro. Bolton 'on behalf of Unity returning thanks. The visitors were afterwards entertained at supper. At the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Valley Lodge, held on Monday evening, N.G. Bro. J. Scott presided over a fair attendance of members and visiting brethren. Before proceeding with the business of the evening the N.G. made sympathetic reference to the passing of an old member, P.G. Bro. W. M. Roberts, who had for some time filled the office of treasurer of the lodge and whose membership had extended over a period of 30 years. Members stood in silence as a tribute of, respect, and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed. The syllabus for the evening was " Anzac," and an inspiring address was given by the Rev. Mr Cooke, who, taking as his subject "The Spirit of Anzac," related incidents of the campaign on Gallipoli and fully explained the significance! of the day. The address was appreciated by all present, and at the conclusion the N.G. conveyed to Mr Cooke the thanks of the lodge. There was a good attendance at the meeting of Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge on Tuesday evening, several visiting lodges being represented. The meeting was presided over by N.G. Bro. H. Armstrong, who stated that the main object of meeting was to honour the memory of their brethren who had fallen in the Great War. A tribute was paid by all present standing in silence for a few moments. A short address was given by Bro. A. Fraser, who spoke on " The Ideal Triumphant." The main address of the evening was delivered by Bro. C. L. Calvert, who stated that he had been deputed to represent the Returned Soldiers' Association. Bro. Calvert said that the association was proud that the. people of New Zealand had set aside April 25 as a day of national remembrance, and, although 18 years had elapsed, interest was greater than ever. The speaker briefly dealt with events leading up to the World War, and vividly related the epic assault on Gallipoli and the hardships cheerfully endured by the troops during the campaign. Not only on Gallipoli but also during the four years which followed the New Zealand soldiers had proved their worth. Bro. Calvert made special reference to the many members of the Order who laid down their lives, and their names would be found on the rolls of honour in every lodgeroom. The ' two addresses • were listened to with keen interest, and a vote of thanks was accorded the two speakers. It was also resolved to forward a letter of thanks to the Returned Soldiers' Association for assistance in providing a speaker for the evening. Before closing the meeting the district officers and a number of visiting brethren made suitable reference to the occasion and congratulated the lodge on its lilting observance of Anzac Day.
