CITY POLICE COURT

Saturday, Apeh. 29. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness was fined 12s 6d, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. REMAND GRANTED. Myrtle Christina Dick was charged with stealing a diamond ring, valued at £2O, the property of Haidee Kathleen Kirk. The accused was represented by Mr 0. J. Rawlinson.—On the application of Chief Detective Young, who stated that the girl had been employed by the complainant and was alleged to have stolen other articles, the accused was remanded in custody until Wednesday. SENT TO BORSTAL. James Roy Johnstone Lawrie appeared for sentence on a charge of the theft of a bicycle, valued at £7, the property of William Edward Dunbar Hawke.— The magistrate said that It was obvious the youth was in need of proper control and discipline. He would be admitted to the Borstal Institution for a period of two years. THEFT CHARGES. John Barrett pleaded guilty to charges of having stolen 10s, the property of Elizabeth Richardson, and a shirt and two handkerchiefs, valued at 7s fid, the property of Lilian Paterson. He also pleaded guilty to a breach of his prohibition order. —Sub-inspector Cameron said that the accused had gone to Mrs Richardson with a story that his mother was dying and he wanted some money to get her some brandy. As the complainant had no change she gave him a 10s note, telling him to bring back the change. He spent the whole of the money on liquor for himself. He had been seen in the vicinity of Mrs Paterson’s premises, and shortly afterwards the articles were missed, from the clothes line. —The magistrate said that the accused’s record showed that he was incorrigibly hopeless, and on each charge of theft sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment. On the charge of the breach of his prohibition order he was fined 12s 6d, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment.
