HARRIERS

The annual handicap race for novices of the St. Kilda Club was held on Saturday afternoon under excellent running conditions. The course, which covered one mile and a-half, commenced at the St. Kilda bathing pavilion, ran along Lovers’ lane, through the sandy track at the southern end of Tahuna Park, and on to Victoria road, along which it continued to Crest street. From here it went down Cavell street, along Gilfillau and Bowen streets, finally turning into Queen’s drive, the finish being at Onslow street. The president (Mr E. A. Rosevear) and a large number of vice-presidents and supporters were present. All 11 competitors, despite the slight head wind, made the pace fast until Crest street was reached, the order being C. More (45sec). L. Cafter (oOsec), L. Anderson (45sec), L. Still (40sec), and S. Ritchie (40sec), with the scratch man, B. Ryan, catching the linyt men in good style. Going down Cavell street, More held his position, while Carter and. Anderson dropped back, and L, Still went to third place. Turning into Gilfillan street the order remained the same until the Musselburgh School, when Still displaced More for first place and Ryan displaced Anderson for third position, the order being: Still, More, Ryan, Anderson, and S. Ritchie. From here on the order did not vary, L. Still being an easy winner from C. More, with B. Ryan 30 yards away third. The race, which was run in the good time of Bmin 58sec, was ably controlled by Messrs A. E. Churchill, J. Boardman, G. Orange, and A. G. Foley. After the race a short run was held for non-competitors, Captain C. Pope and Deputy A. Brown being in charge. The Northern Harrier Club held its weekly run from the Maori Hill Methodist Church. The trail led down Highgate into Cannington road, to the Ross Creek Reservoir reserves, where the paper, in the hands of J. Lothian and C. Wallace, started. The course led through the reserves to the reservoir, on to the road, and over the hills to Flagstaff. Here the paper was lost, and the pack went along the Wakari road to the power station. The pack then split up into two groups —the fast under Captain R. M'Kinlay, and the slow under Acting-deputy-captain B. Pearce. The latter followed the road past the school, and in the run home B. Pearce, B. Haugh, and J. Howie reached the church in that order. The fast pack went on down North Taieri road to the tram terminus. A. Jackson, C. Blackledge, and R. Haley reaching there first. The Caversham Harriers held their weekly run from Port Chalmers in ideal weather. The packs were under: Captain Brown the fast, J. Robertson the second, and K; Miller the third. The trail led from the Garrison Hall along the PortDunedin road, following the course taken in the Port Road Race to the top of Tunnel Hill. From here the runners went straight up the hill to the Cafe road, which was followed for about half a mile. The packs then struck off across country towards the back of Sawyers’ Bay, some hilly country being encountered until the Reservoir road at the back of Sawyers’ Bay -was reached. There the packs took separate courses. The first and second going across country to the far end of Sawyers’ Bay, then down across the main road and along the cinder track home. The slow pack went down the road into Sawyers’ Bay, then up the hill behind Port Chalmers, and down on to the main road at the overbridge of the main north railway line. The packs were somewhat disorganised, but the most prominent runners were L. Gerrie, G. Hebbard, and G. Sadler in the fast; W. Small], P. Todd, and G. Mitchell in the second, and S. Williams in the third.

The Cargill Road Methodists ran from Mornington Methodist Church, a good muster of 21 members turning out. Under the whistles of Captain F. Harman and Deputy J. Wallace the pack proceeded up to Kenmure road and along to Stone street, down to the Kaikorai Valley and towards Brockvillc. The pack reached Mount Grand, and proceeded-down the clay road to the reservoir. There was a race round to the reservoir, the runners being handicapped. When the reservoir was reached' the packs split up, the slow pack running up the Valley road to Barr street, and thence home, R. Barclay being first and W. MacGregor and M. M'lndoe (equal) second. The fast pack proceeded down the valley and up to Lookout Point, around Kenmure road, and then on to the church. Following a fast run home, J Wallace was first, the Rev. I. S. Williamson second, and D. Lurtib third. Anglican Harriers held their weekly run from the Mornington School, about 40 members turning out. The first pack (under Harrier-captain M'Dougall) ran down to Burnside and up to the Silverstream reservoir. The water-race was followed for several miles, when a turn was made to the right. Some good harrier country was traversed on the way home, and a short sprint resulted in Holmes, Allen, and Waugh arriving in that order, with Divers and Neill close up. The slow pack (under Club Captain Price) crossed the Kaikorai Valley and skirted the left side of Brockville, meeting the water-race about two miles from the reservoir. In a short run home Pettit, Lake, and Greenall were prominent. - The Pacific Club commenced its third run from the Anderson’s Bay School with an attendance of 17 members. Leaving the school they proceeded up the high road and then traversed good crosscountry to the monument. From there a good pace was kept up, down to Smail’e Beach, good cross-country ground still being covered. From Tomahawk a fast pace wa s maintained along to Lawyer’s Head. In the run home, starting from the cemetery, S. Lucas, H. Pearce, and L. Hill finished in that order. The members showed improved form on their previous performances. The weekly run of the Hanover Baptist Club was held from the Mornington Baptist Church, and a muster of 45 members turned out for what became one of the longest runs that has ever been held since the club’s inception. Split into three packs—the slow under Deputy-captain Meggett, the juniors under Captain Gibson, and the racing pack under Deputy S. A. Gibson —and, following a previously arranged trail along Elgin road towards Lookout Point, the club ran down into Burnside, crossing through the fi-eezing works, and across country to the dam above the cement works. From here boggy country was encountered. The packs then turned towards the water race, where some strenuous running was carried out towards the reservoir, the runners then branching off to Flagstaff. The fast and junior packs indulged in some solid cross-country work. A road was discovered which led into the Kaikorai Valley. Passing the Roslyn Mill the trail led up Stone street to Elgin road. In the short run home Brown, Milburn, and F. Lancaster led the fast pack. W. Lancaster, A. Scoones, and E. Meggett were first for the juniors. Of the slow pack, which had finished earlier, Craig, Felton, and Clark were first home. The Civil Service One Mile and Ahalf Maiden Race was held from St. Kilda car terminus, where 21 runners faced the starter, Mr H. J. C. M'Kenzie. The conditions were ideal, and it was evident after half the journey had been completed that fast time would be recorded. At the turn the leader was A. Kirkwood (15sec), closely followed by Wilson and Toner. With half a mile to go the order had changed, and Kirkwood (15sec) had a commanding lead of 100 yards. Toner (15sec) was second, Mason (15sec) third, and with a-quarter of a mile to go Mason passed Toner. The order at the finish was: A. Kirkwood (15sec) 1, D. Mason (15sec) 2, T. Toner (15sec) 3, and A. Adams (lOsec) 4. The winner’s time was 7min 58sce. A. Kirkwood ran a fine race, and won by 150 yards with plenty in hand. The seniors held a short nonstop run from St. Kilda to Tomahawk and back. The places at the finish were: j G. Barnes, E. C. Brown; A. R. Geddes in that order. The intermediate pack, under Deputy-captain Brydone, held a similar run. and the placings at the finish were: E. M'Gillivray, A. Davies, and TV M. Brydone.

Leith Club ran from George Street School. D Eckhoff and J. Mason were responsible for the trail, which was followed along King street and down Union street to Port Chalmers road. A smart pace was maintained to Ravcnsbourne. Opposite the football grounds the trail led straight over the hill to the butts. The ascent was made through manuka scrub, but the descent was a variation in the nature of gorss. From here another climb was encountered to the Opoho football grounds. Striking the road again, a fast run was held back through the Botanic Gardens. In a short run home F. Miller was first, closely followed by W. Mann.

The feature of the Dunedin Harriers run on Saturday was the good turn out of the older members. The pack, under Captain Sturgeon and Deputy-captain Ferguson, ran up Taieri road to the start of the two-mile cut and round the face of Flagstaff to the reserve. The runners then proceeded past Cameron’s farm to

the Wakari power station, and from there a fast run home was held, which resulted in A. Storer heading J. Lorimer and R. Wetherston by feet. > ■
