TROTTING
By Sentinel. The .first payment in connection with the New Zealand Derby Stakes will close with the secretary of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting' Club on Monday next at noon. It is understood that - the Waikato pacer First-Flight,’ is come south’to be trained by C. S. Donald. ’ - ; ' The acceptances received- for the-firsC' day Of- the Forbury Park meeting' are 1 very satisfactory and the club has every reason to expect a most successful fixture. R. B. Berry has a likely team engaged at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting. They are Belle Lorimer, Checkers, Lilian Bond, and Lord Leslie. The four horses are in the pink of condition and will make the trip. In Donum the field: should have a hard horse to beat over a mile and a-quarter at Wanganui to-day. Donum .was educated at Addington by J. J.'Shaw, and is now trained 1 by M. Moran, owner of Edna Worthy and Impromptu.. Donum’S stoutest opponent’ will be Golden Harvest, who should also .find a 10-furlong journey to her liking. C. S. Donald was present at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Thursday, wrere he drove Astral and Gunmetal. He left immediately after the second trotting event and_ went straight through to Wanganui to' pilot his representatives. Golden . Harvest, Ulm, and Special Sun, in their engagements at the northern meeting to-day. The favourites in the two, events at Timaru to-day- are , likely; to be:—Opihi Handicap—General Wrack,. Village Guy, and Shnhrown; Beaconsfield Handicap— Waress, Rey Direct, and Ruth Logan. Suncross is a mare that .should do well over a short track, and the Sungod mare is one that is capable of a good effort over a sprint distance or a two-mile journey. W,. Cosgrove’s charge has not gone a bad race this season, but on two or three occasions she has left her feet, at the start. At the Invercargill .meeting in March her capabilities were revealed when she won a mile event in an impressive .fashion in 2.19 on a slow track. She has been doing good work of late. The Tapanui-trained Golden Bingen may be seen to advantage at the Forbury Park meeting as he won in his last outing at the Wyndham meeting in an impressive The Nelson Bingen gelding is a stylish and capable trotter, and although he previously was inclined to, be erratic, he has only to repeat the form of his Wyndham success to be again in the money. He may provide solid opposition to Teviot Downs if they meet. , One of the most likely of the local contingent at the Forbury Park meeting will be the Otautau mentor,. J. Macomiells candidate, Blue Mountain Queen, who has been one of the most promising performers that has risen from maiden status this season (says the Southlanci Times). The daughter of the defunct sire Blue Mountain- King has worn well in both saddle and harness, and in all her efforts she has displayed stamina of the best heart. She is a -particularly well-
conformed mare that is expected to accomplish higher honours. The soft going docs not hinder her, for in her last start she won a mile and a-balf event (in saddle) in 3.36 2-5 on the Invercargill course, which is slow at any time, while on the day in question it was particularly holding. The outing of Blue Mountain Queen next week will be her first for two months.
