GUILTY OF THEFT
TWO YOUNG MEN SENTENCED DISPOSAL OF GOODS UNDISCLOSED. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 28. Describing the offences as most serious, Mr Justice Herdman sentenced James Bernard Lawless, aged 25, to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour, and Jack Kavanagh, aged 22, to two years. They had admitted seven charges of burglary and the theft of goods worth £6OO. Counsel for the prisoners L suggested that, being out of work, they had much idle time in which to concoct the offences. It might be the condition of the times, but it seemed a pity that a young man of 22 should be before the court. After saying that £6OO worth of property had been stolen, Ins Honor asked the prisoners; “Where is that property?” Kavanagh replied that it had been disposed of. His Honor: To whom? Neither prisoner answered. His Honor; Very well. The police say you stubbornly refused to say what you did with it.
