“SLOPE ARMS”
BRIGHT VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT A repeat performance of “ Slope Anna,” the bright variety entertainment produced by the Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment, a few weeks ago, was given before a fairly large audience in the Town Hall Concert Chamber last evening. The programme submitted was excellently varied and the audience made no secret of its complete satisfaction with the quality of the fare provided. Following a fanfare of trumpets by the Bugle and Trumpet Band, the Regimental Band played the march “Stars and Stripes,” and the overture “La Trompette,” and at different intervals during the programme presented the selection “ Chu Chin Chow” the march “The Entry of the Gladiators,” the march “ Let’s Go,” the valse ‘ Golden Valsc,” and the Regimental March, In conjunction with the band, the trombone solo, “ The Switchback” was played by Bandsman F. Haldane, the remaining instrumental item being a waltz arranged by Lieutenant J. L. Napier, and played by the Trumpet and Bugle Band. Much amusement was provided by the Ist Battalion Entertainers, a small but versatile band of comedians, who presented a number of bright and breezy skits and sketches, some of which were very far from being sternly military in spirit. Mr Alex M'Dowell’s fine bass-baritone voice was heard to excellent advantage in two numbers, “Boots” (Kipling), and “The Riderless Steed” (Hussel), the other vocalist being Lieutenant T. C. Williams, a baritone of good quality, who sang two numbers. An enjoyable programme was brought to a close by the playing of the “Last Post” by the Trumpet and Bugle Band.
