;*of the four jockeys who were in the fall at Riccarton on Easter Monday, K. E; Coveny is making very slow progress in hospital, where A. Russell is doing well. C. E. Eastwood has been sent home with his broken leg in plaster of Paris. A. H. Eastwood is suffering from a broken bone in a shoulder and ne will not be ;»ble to ride for a week or two. :|- Birkbeck is again a member oi Mrs f;A. M'Donald's team at Awapuni and he was schooled this week. He has had J * long spell, but two years ago he was Ia good"" performer, the Egmont and Wa'nganui Steeplechases being among his ...successes. If he trains on he will be a -v welcome addition to the cross-country horses during the approaching winter ■ campaign. Peter Jackson must have cost his adT mirers a lot of money in Australia this He registered a good performance in the Dangar Handicap, on the • concluding day of the Australian Jockey meeting. He lost his rider and galloped a mile before the start, so he aid exceptionally well to run second to /Pretzel, a good horse. Peter Jackson S|is due for an early return to the Do- ;■', 'minion, in preparation for which he has % -been nominated for the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting in June. ■ The twp-year-old Fiat Lux, by Jericho from Luminant, has rejoined F. D .Jones's team, after a spell, and will.bt started on a preparation' for spring en- . jgagements. ; ' 8. Barr, who took several horses to the West Coast, may continue his journey to the Nelson and' Marlborough meetings •with his team before he.returns home, i The: C.J.C. Champagne Stakes has - a irather unusual record. At one period Mr 6. G. Stead won it 10 years in succession, and at a later stage'Sir George Clifford provided the winner nine times in 10 years. Altogether Mr Stead won it 13 times, and Sir G. Clifford 15 times. Fleeting Glance, has had another change of owners. She was sold this week to the West Coast sportsman, Mr A. Beban, and raced in his colours at Greymouth. Now that rain has set m, ■he should show improved form, as she is partial to soft ground. . Autopay earned £455 as a result of his win (La Perouse Handicap) and third (Cropper Plate) in four starts at the recent A.J.C. meeting. On his trip across in the spring he collected only £65 for two thirds in seven starts. Golden Hairs third in the A;J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes was Worth £3OO, and this should more 'than have paid the expenses of her trip to Sydney. La Moderne gained a third worth £IOO in the All-Aged Plate, her one placing in her three starts, but it is unlikely that this would have covered full expenses. . Advance Camp, who did not look in anything like his best racing condition when produced at Timaru yesterday, showed some good hurdle form in Auckland last season, when owned and trained by 0. P. Buckenham, who was at Riccar- ' ton for a few years. The jumper lost form, and yesterday was his first start since he came south. IS. Scoullar has two additions to his team in Royal Limond and Silver Briar, both the property of the Christchureh owner, Mr A. Syme. He purchased Royal Limond at the Easter sale in Christchureh and has since acquired the latter from Mr :G. Gerard. She is a two-year-old, by Silverado from Paper Rose, and has shown a fair amount of promise. Unless there is a change in the plans, the racing career of Concentrate came to a close when he finished sixth in the Great Autumn Handicap last week (says the Christchureh Times). His recent displays have satisfied Mr R. J. Murphy that the Kilbroney gelding is not likely to recover his form, and it is probable that he Will end his days in the Nelson district, as he is to be given away to a friend, to be used as a hack. In the meantime, C. Emerson will keep him for a few weeks, but with no idea of training him again. Concentrate raced for six seasons, for 11 wine and 26 placed per formances, during which he earned more than £IO,OOO in stakes. His successes included the New Zealand St. Leger, Great Northern St. Leger, Auckland Cup, and Wellington Cup, but with an ounce of luck his winning record would have been much better. He was second to Nightmarch in the New Zealand Cup as a fiyeyear*o!d, and a few weeks later was third in the Auckland Cup. Two of his most unfortunate experiences came in Australia, in the spring of last season. He was beaten by a head in the Metropolitan Handicap and followed up that performance by running third in the Melbourne Cup, after breaking down some distance from home. ».
