FATAL SLIMMING CRAZE

GIRL BECOMES INSANE. . How a girl’s fear of becoming fat drove her insane, and then to suicide, was revealed at the inquest at Birmingham in February on Ethel Mary Cope, aged 21, who gassed herself. A relative said the girl had been undergoing a slimming diet for several months, and toward the end of last year she became eccentric. “ She grew careless about her appearance and would not go out of doors,” she said. A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned. A friend said afterwards: “Ethel was naturally slim, but she became obsessed with the fear that site might get fat. For long spells she ate nothing but fruit. She lived on one coconut for days.”
