The Calm Is timed to sail this evening for Timaru and Lyttelton to complete loading for Wellington, Plcton and Wanganui. The motor vessel Port Whangarel .Is due at Dunedin to-morrow from Wellington. The vessel will probably undergo survey before loading tor northern ports. The Storm is due here on Saturday from Bluff to load for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington and Wanganui. , , , _ ~ The Oplhi has been fixed to load at Dunedin on Saturday for Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth, via ports. The Waiplata Is to leave Auckland tomorrow for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff. She 1s due hero on April 26. The Totara was to leave Westport yesterday for Oaraaru and Dunedin. She is due here about Sunday. The Holmdale is due at Dunedin on Friday morning from Wellington to discharge and load general cargo. She is timed to sail on Friday evening for Wellington, Plcton and Wanganui, via ports. The Somerset is to leave Wellington this morning for London and other ports of the United Kingdom, via Cape Horn. The New Zealand Shipping Company s steamer Otaki arrived at Wellington on Saturday morning from Auckland to continue her Homeward loading. She is to leave Wellington to-morrow for Wanganui to complete loading, and is scheduled to clear that port finally on April 22 for London, via Cape Horn, Montevideo and Las Palmas. WAIKOUAITI FROM AUSTRALIA. The Union Company advises that the Waikouaitl is to complete loading at Sydney to-day for Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru and Lyttelton. She is due here about April 25. CITY OP CAMBRIDGE IN DOCK. The steamer City of Cambridge, which discharged American cargo at Dunedin last week, was docked at Port Chalmers yesterday morning to have the wooding of her tail shaft renewed and for cleaning and painting. When the vessel conics out of dock sho will proceed to Newcastle. ' FRUIT FROM THE ISLANDS. The Government motor ship Maul Poraare arrived at Lyttelton on Monday morning from Apia and Niue. She discharged bananas yesterday and then sailed for Wellington. AKAROA ARRIVES HOME. The Shaw, Savill Company has received cable advice that the liner Akaroa reached Southampton on April 12. She left Wellington on March 8 for Southampton and London, via the Panama canal. THE PORT WAIKATO. The motor ship Port Waikato arrived at Lyttelton on Sunday night from Waitangl, Chatham Islands, where she discharged a cargo of Australian hardwood for the now wharf. The vessel is due at Dunedin to-day to load general cargo for Tauranga, Auckland and Whangarei. , WIRELESS PROM TAINUI. The Talnul. which left Auckland on April G for Southampton and London, via Panama canal, has reported by wireless that “JJ® weather has been experienced since leaving port and all are well on board. THE PORT MELBOURNE, Messrs J. W. Swift and Co., advise that the Commonwealth and Dominion Line vessel Port Melbourne Is expected to leave BlulT at 10 o’clock to-night for Port Chalmers, where she Is due to-morrow morning for Homeward loading. The vessel Is expected to sail on Friday for Wellington to continue loading, and will afterwards complete at Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland, being scheduled to clear the last port Anally on May 6 for London, via Cape Horn. NEW TYPE OP FREIGHTER. The Gotavcrken Shipyard recently launched a new type of cargo vessel for the Zenith bmpping Company of Goteborg. The vessel was built with consideration of the severe competition in the shipping trade, and is designed to transport cargo at as low freights as Possible. The main dimensions are as follows .—Length over all, 390 feet, moulded breadth 55 feet, moulded depth to shelter deck 36 feet. The vessel will load 8300 tons deadweight on a draft of 24 feet 10 inches, and has a grain capacity of 485,000 cubic feet. The ballast tanks in the double bottom will hold_ 1500 ruble meters and can be used for ballast water or fuel oil. In addition, there are ballast tanks in the peaks and °n the shelter deck, under the bridge, holding 211 and 370 cubic meters, respectively. were built with a view to the difficulties of obtaining cargo from port to port, and the freouenV necessity of making long vojages in ballast fn order to obtatn the most advantageous freights. With all the ballast water placed In the bottom only, the vessels generally are subject - to a too heavy listing and experience has shown that such listing can ., b ® by Installing the deck tanks mentioned.
