WINNINGS ON THE TURF
FAMOUS TRAINER’S DEBTS: Details of his earnings as a racehorse trainer were given by Mr Charles Morton at his public examination in bankruptcy at Brighton, England, lately. Mr Morton, who is 79, lives at Hove. His deficiency was £3856, and he ascribed it to the reduction from £ISOO to £OOO of a voluntary allowance from Mr J. B. Joel, for whom he trained, and to heavy interest he had paid to moneylenders. He stated that he became a trainer in 1879 with a capital of £2OO. Nine years later he became Mr Joel’s trainer. He closed his stables in 1915, but opened them at Wantage four years later. He retired in 1924 with an allowance of £ISOO a year. In May, 1931, Mr Joel reduced the allowance. It was added by Mr. Morton that lie won the Derby for Mr Joel on two occasions, with Sunstar and Humorist. Altogether he won for Mr Joel more than £200,000, and received 10 per cent, of the winnings. He thought that possibly the reason for the reduction in the allowance made to him by Mr Joel was that ho had gone to a moneylender instead of approaching Mr Joel.
