The Rev. E. T. Cox, of the Mornington Methodist Church, has announced his intention of contesting the election for the city Mayoralty. Mr A. E. Martin, director of Germ Lubricants, Ltd., London and Manchester, is at present visiting Dunedin, He intends returning to Christchurch during the week-end, and will later visit China and Java before leaving for England. Sir Louis Barnett left Wellington on Wednesday for Sydney. Mr J. H. O’Donnell, controller of accounts of the Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, will leave by the express this morning for Christchurch after visiting Dunedin on departmental busineAt the jubilee celebrations of the St. Leonards School yesterday, ex-pupils present who attended the school under the late Mr T. Johnston, who was headmaster from 1878 to 1892, sent a telegram corn-eying greetings to Mrs Johnston, who is at present .residing in Nelson. Mr H. Credgington and Mr J. Ritchie will leave this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of directors of the Amalgamated Kawarau Company. The funeral of Mr Julius Johnson, which took place yesterday afternoon at the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, was very largely attended. Members of, the Dunedin Bowling Club, six of whom acted as pall-bearers, were present in large force and there were also representatives from Lodge 844, E.C., of which the deceased was a member. The services at the residence and at the cemetery were conducted by the Rev. W. Hardy JohnS °A Press Association telegram from. Wellington states that Mr Richard Wain e Gibbs, a director of the Bank of New Zealand, representing the .shareholders interests on the board, was unanimously elected chairman in succession to Mr Oliver Nicholson, of Auckland. Mr L. J. Schmitt, New Zealand Trade and Tourist Commissioner in Australia, will arrive in Dunedin on the aiternoon of Tuesday next, and will go on to Invercargill on Wednesday. His visit is directly concerned with getting into touch with various interests exporting to Australia and with those who are vitally interested in tourist matters. Consequent upon the Southland Boys High School having _ risen in grade, a vacancy has occurred in the grade B position. ’At a meeting of the Board of Governors on Thursday Mr A. J. Deaker, M.A., who at present holds a C grade position on the staff, was promoted to the vacancy. His place will be taken by Mr Leslie V. Bryant, M.A., who at present occupies a C grade position on the staff of the Waitaki Boys’ High School. Members of the congregation of the Abbotsford Methodist Church met recently for the purpose of bidding farewell to the Rev. A. E. Waite, who is about to leave the district to occupy the pulpit of the Bluff Methodist Church. The Mayor of Green Island (Mr W. T. Smeilie), the Rev. A. W, Armstrong, of the Green Island Presbyterian Church, and Ensign Alcott, of the Salvation Amy, spoke of the work done in the district by Mr Waite, and Mr T. M'Ahan, on behalf of the congregation, made presentations to Mr and Mrs Waite and their family. Mr and Mrs Waite were tendered a farewell social at Mosgiel on Thursday night, when Mr Waite was presented with a Mosgiel travelling rug and Mrs Waite was also the recipient of a gift from the congregation of the local Methodist Church.
