“Central Otago.”—(1) and (2) To convert a skin into greenhide It Is first necessary to remove the hair. To do this, mix for an average-sized hide about a peck of airslaked lime In half a isirrel of water, and stir briskly. Then Immerse the hide, and let It remain from three to five days, stirring two or tlirpe times dally. Try from time to time to remove the hair with any blunt tool, such as the back of a case knife. Remove all the hair and rinse in clear water. Then make a solution of 31b of crushed alum, 51b of saltpetre, and lib or 21b of salt. Put these , Into enough water to cover the hide fully. Let It remain two weeks, stirring once or twice dally. At the end of two weeks the hide will be tanned. Tack the hide out on a smooth place, such as a barn door, stretching in all directions. Get out all the wrinkles, and when nearly dry rub It with tallow, and. If at hand, good cod oil, rubbing It In well. Then roll It up for a few days; keep It In a warm place, not hot, away from the sun. Soften by rubbing well, and, if necessary, use more tallow. This makes a light-coloured leather. If It is to be blackened do it before any tallow Is put on. Use soz of nutgalls and Boz of copperas, dissolved 'n one quart of vinegar or elder, soaking the hide overnight, or 24 hours If necessary.
