RIFLE SHOOTING

DUNEDIN DEFENCE CLUB. The Dunedin Defence Rifle Club shot the final competition for prizes presented by Captain G. C. Proudfoot and Mr R. M. Greensdale on Saturday afternoon. The attendance numbered 21, and 10 shots (two optional Bight era) each were fired at 500 and 600 yards. Weather conditions were fine, but the of wind and light had competitors guessing at times. The best score at 500 yards was 47 by Rifleman J. L. Benfell. At 600 yards Rifleman W. A. Graham was top with 44. Rifleman J. L. Benfell headed the day’s aggregate with 90. The West Taieri Defence Rifle Club fired its final match for Mr Webster s trophy on Saturday. The weather conditions were tricky, but some good scores were recorded. At 300 yards E. Dow made a fine 47, H. Brookes and R. McDonald being nest with 46. At 600 yards H. Brookes, A. Fraser, and W. Irving each scored 46. Results: —

The result of the competition for Mr Webster’s trophy is as follow: —G. Grant 184. W. Irving 182, H. Brookes 181. The winners of the button and rifle are unchanged, H. Brookes holding the button, and G. Grant the rifle, KAITANGATA DEFENCE CLUB. The Kaitangata Defence Rifle Club held a practice shoot on Saturday, there being a fair muster of members. The afternoon was fine, but the bright light and variable breeze from the right roar were factors against high scoring. Ten shots were fired at 300 and 500 yards, and several of the competitors had a snap-shooting practice at 300 yards, with open sights and no sling. The results were indifferent. Shooting at 300 yards J. Bellaney with 45 was highest scorer, being closely followed by M. Brown (44). At 500 yards J. H. Frazer and J. Bellaney scored 46 each. J. Alexander, J. Burgess, and R. M’Crostie, with 45 each, also shot well.! The following are the scores:—

P. J. M'Guire and W. Alexander also shot. W. Crowe (43) shot at 500 yards only. GIMMERBURN CLUB. The Gimmerburn Rifle Club held a match on the Ranfurly range on Saturday. Conditions were poor, there being a variable wind and a bright, hard light. The following are the scores: —
