I SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.
Our correspondent at the Gold Fields writes us:—“The rush to the Tuapeka river has been greatly checked owing to the wet weather prevailing on the Gold fields. Rumor has it, that although one or two parties are doing well the rush is an entire failure. ...” We publish elsewhere a very interesting report on the navigation of the Catling River, furnished to the Superintendent by Captain Thompson, the Harbor Miistsr. During the quarter, ended 31st March, 102 births were registered, as having occurred in the district—the number for the corresponding period of last year was 67. There were 63 marriages solemnised during the first quarter of the present year, against 29 for the corresponding period of 1861. Of deaths, there occurred 65 during the quarter terminating Slat March, 1862, against 26 during the first quarter of 3861. Among these there were 18 fatal cases of diarrhoea; 8 of typhoid fever; 1 of Asiatic cholera; 2 of Mstne fever: 1 case of death from epileptic convulsions from softening of the brain; and 1 of sunstroke. . . Of the 65 deaths which occurred during the last quarter were 21 of infants under twelvemonths old. ARRIVAL OF THE ESCORT.
