MILTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON, April 3. TOKO HIGH SCHOOL. Two new appointments to the teaching staff of the Tokomairiro District High School recommended by the Otago Education Board have been approved of by the School Committee at a special meeting. Miss Winifred Smith, at present of Waihopai School, Southland, has been appointed fourth assistant in the Primary Department. Mr George S. Maloney, M.A., of Geraldine High School, has been appointed assistant in the Secondary Department—Both will commence their new duties on May 23, after the term vacation. THE RAINFALL. Last month was an exceptionally dry month in Milton district, and the official rain gauge recordings show the total rainfall during March of only .78 inches on nine rain days, as compared with 3:28 inches last year on seven rain days. The maximum fall (-26) occurred on the 2lst nit., whereas the maximum fall last year in the month of March was 2.7 inches on the Thursday prior to the Easter holidays. An even drier month was experienced in March, 1931, with a total recording of only .65 inches on six rain days. VITAL STATISTICS. The registrations at Milton Post Office for the Tokomairiro district during March, with the figures for the corresponding month last year in parentheses, were:— Births 8 (4), marriages 1 (2), deaths 6 (2). The figures for the quarter ended March 31 were:—Births 18 (15), marriages 4 (5), deaths 12 (6). PERSONAL. Mr F. H. Garth, local postmaster, commenced his annual four-weeks’ leave of absence this morning. Mr A. B. Littlejohn is acting as chief officer. _ Mr Smolensk!, from Dunedin office, is acting as relieving officer at the local post office during Mr White’s absence on sick leave;. WELCOME RAIN. After a lengthy spell of dry weather, welcome rain commenced about 5 p.m. yesterday, and continued with greater or less intensity throughout the night, until about 8 o’clock this morning. Deleted tank supplies in the country districts were replenished to overflowing, and the rain is particularly welcomed by the farmers. Cold and boisterous winds were experienced to-day, with intermittent showers. COUNTY RATES. ■ Although there was no perceptible rush of Bruce County ratepayers to pay their rates in the final stages before the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty, the total of £4500 was paid in by ratepayers within the final 10 days prior to March 31. Altogether about 78 per cent, of the rates have been paid, which contrasts very favourably, with the experience of some other counties. MOTOR ACCIDENT. - As the result of being thrown from bis motor cycle on Saturday evening on Tokoiti road, a young man named John Hughes suffered head, facial, and other injuries, which necessitated medical attention.
