JEWS IN GERMANY

TREATMENT BY NAZIS ATTITUDE OF BRITAIN DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT (British Official Wireless.) (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY, March 30. References to the treatment of the Jews in Germany were made to-day in both Houses of Parliament to day. Asked in the House of Commons whether he would bring the question before the League of Nations Council, Sir John Simon said there was no article in the covenant under which the British Government could possibly do eo. Mr G. Lansbury (Leader of the Opposition) requested that, in view of the statements published by both sides alleging the persecution of all soils of people in Germany, the British Ambassador in Berlin should be asked to report, so that some authentic news would be available. The Foreign Secretary said the suggestion was quite reasonable, the matter had not been overlooked and he was in communication with the ambassador. During the discussion on foreign affairs in the House of Lords, Viscount Cecil said that many thousands of Jews were subjects of the King, and were among the most peaceful and orderly citizens of Britain. It was obvious that events in a foreign country which caused unrest and anxiety among a large section of the British public must give concern to the Government. Whether the Government could do anything was another matter, but they would be grateful if they could be given some assurance. Viscount Cecil’s remarks were supported by Lord Ponsonby. Lord Reading stated that the attack at the moment was directed against university professors and othei professional men in Germany, for no other reason than that they happened to be members of the Jewish community. The Government should at least use such legitimate means as were in its yower to show Germany what was feU by the British people, but he could net press it to do anything further. Sir Charles Iggesleigh, as a Roman Catholic, expressed real sympathy for the Jews of Germany, and the Archbishop of Canterbury associated himself with Lord Reading’s remarks Lord Hailsham defined the limits within which the British Government could act. He said there were a very large number of British citizens of Jewish descent. If any of these were arrested or ill-treated in Germany the British Government would have the right to complain or to press for justice. From inquiries made they had been unable to learn that there had been any such case in Germany. “OUR RIGHT TO LIVE” JEWS APPEAL TO LEADERS. BERLIN, March 30.
