JOHN BROWNLEE’S CONCERTS
“Any local student who desires a standard set for him will .find that a night with Brownlee will be the most practical help he could possibly obtain; what his teacher may desire to impart, Brownlee graphically illustrates,” wrote the musical critic of the Brisbane Daily Mail in referring to the flawless way in which the famous" Australian-Scots baritonp uses his beautiful voice. In a review of a subsequent concert the same critic said: “It is indeed gratifying to hear John Brownlee at the height of his career—too often we have to wait until the rest of the world is finished with an. artist. Aspiring singers will have learnt much by Mr Brownlee’s visit. He makes perfect what our teachers are striving to impart, and a practical illustration of what is required is worth much.” Next Tuesday night Dunedin will have the pleasure of welcoming John Brownlee to the South Island, for this city is the first South Island centre to hear the eminent baritone. In addition to Mr Brownlee there will be two other brilliant young artists —Miss Rita Miller, an Australian coloratura soprano, and Mr Raymond Lambert, a young Belgian pianist, who has been creating a stir throughout the North Island with his artistic accompaniments and his fine solo work. For next Tuesday’s concert Mr Brownlee has selected a programme comprising operatic arias, old French songs, old-world English numbers, and modern English offerings. Requests for special encore numbers may be left at the Bristol, and as far as-possible will be acceded to. Miss Rita Miller will sing “Che Ficro Costume” (Caccini), “La Danza” (Durante), and “Una Voce Poco Fa ” from “ The Barber of Seville” (Rosini), and the brilliant - .pianist of the party, Mr Raymond Lambert,' will play “Pastoral and Capriccio” (Scarlatti-Tausig), “ G avotte and Variations ” (RamcauLecbeteski), and “Hungarian Rhapsody, No. 6” (Liszt).
