SIX NURSES RESIGN
QUESTION OF DISCIPLINE. A mild sensation was caused in hospital circles in Palmerston North a week ago when it became known that six sisters on the public hospital staff bad resigned in a body. The resignations were considered by the board in committee at its meeting on Monday, and it was decided to accept them. When the board resumed in open meeting the chairman moved for confirmation of a resolution that the resignations be accented. . , Mr R. L. C. Aitchison immediately moved an amendment that the sisters be asked to withdraw their resignations until a full inquiry had been made by the board ifito the circumstances which had caused them to be tendered. ' The amendment was seconded by Mr V . E Smith, who said that the present weight of evidence before the board was six to one in favour of the sisters. Mr A. E. Mansford: I don’t know these girls, but I know the matron. I think that some of the sisters are being sacrificed for the sake of discipline. “We would be sacrificing good sisters, commented Mr L. T. M'Lean, in adding his support to the amendment. The amendment, on being put to the board, was defeated by nine votes to five. The motion was then carried on a similar division.
