The opening meeting of the Law Students’ Debating Society was held last Monday, there being a record attendance of members. The subject for debate was “ That a Severe Tax should be Imposed on Bachelors and Spinsters Over the Age of 23.” and the judge for the evening was Mr J. P. Ward. Mr More, wno led for the affirmative, urged the need of a national outlook rather than an individual one in times of stress. He said he regarded the bachelors and'spinsters as legitimate prey of the legislative body. Mr M'Elrea, for the negative, expounded the doctrine of non-interference. He pointed out the fact that it would be impossible to impose the tax on account of the low wages of clerical and manual workers, and also on account of the exemptions which it would be necessary to make. After hearing the' arguments advanced by the various speakers, the judge made the following placings:—Mr More I,’Mr Arthur 2, Mr Kemnitz 3, Mr Meade 4.
