SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive of the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Messre E. C. Hazlett (chairman), G. L. Denniston, W. Gilbert, Bruce Anderson, and Captain Dilner. Before the business of the meeting was commenced the chairman referred to a loss suffered by the society through the death of Mr H. L, Tapley, who durum the number of years in which he had been a member of the executive, had given the society valuable assistance. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. , , , , The chairman said that £IOO had been granted towards the relief of the victims of the waterside accident at Napier, in which a launch had been sunk in a collision.—The action was approved. The Huddart, Parker Company forwarded £4, the amount secured for the society by means of collections on the new vessel Wanganella, during its visit to the Dominion. The Acting Secretary to the Treasury advised that his Excellency the GovernorGeneral had waived the forfeiture of £2O of the amount of £32 2s in silver which had been brought into New Zealand by the purser of the Zealandia, and had directed that this sum was to be paid to the society, as it had been established that this amount had been collected on behalf of the society. 1 The secretary of the Thames Harbour Board advised that in consequence of the board being in arrears with loan interest and sinking fund payments it was regretted that this year the board could not make a donation to the society’s funds. The seven members, at the meeting and the secretary had decided personally to make a donation, and he therefore forwarded a cheque for £1 Os 6d. —The chairman said that it was a very nice action on the part of the members of the board, and was much appreciated by the society. Donations to the society’s funds were acknowledged from the following bodies; — Wairoa Harbour Board, fl Is; Oamaru Harbour Board, £2 2s; Nelson Harbour Board, £2 2s; Greymouth Harbour Board, £lO 10s; Auckland Harbour Board, £5 6s; Gisborne Harbour Board, £2 2s; Borough of Riverton, £1 Is: Bluff Harbour Board, £5; Wellington Harbour Board, £5 ss. The Otago Harbour Board advised that it could not see its way to make a donation this year. The general secretary of the British Sailors’ Society wrote thanking the. Shipwreck Relief Society for its donation of £SO towards its funds.
