DUNEDIN FIRE BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING 1 The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Fire Board was held yesterday, and was attended by the chairman (Mr J. Wilson) and Messrs W. H. Scott, F. T. Anderson, F. Wilkinson. A. A. B. Brabant, and S. B. Macdonald. Superintendent J. J. Salmon was also in attendance. The General Committee’s report, stating that requisitions for various stores had been granted, and that accounts amounting to £2488 19s 4d had been passed for payment, was approved. The town clerk of Green Island (Mr A. L. Burk) wrote congratulating the board on the exceptionally fine save effected by the brigade at Messrs Harraway and Sons’ flour mill at Green Island, which was all the more meritorious in .view of the fact that the pressure of water was very poor. The save was due principally to the fact that Superintendent Salmon had a pump on the spot in a very short time.—Received. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The superintendent (Mr J. J. Salmon) reported as follows on the work of the brigade during February:— The calls attended were as follows: — Fires 6, chimney fires 6, rubbish and bush 8, false alarms —malicious 6, justifiable 3. automatic 1: —total, 32. No serious fires occurred. The interior of a dwelling in Grosvenor street was severely damaged, and very slight damage was occasioned by the other fires. Five chimney fires were attended from the Central Station and one from the Roslyn Station. Four false alarms were given by street alarm and two by telephone. The property affected was as follows:—Dwellings 3, stable 1, hotel 1, railway truck 1. washhouse 1, motor car 1. Causes of fires were as follows:—Electric iron 1, cigarette 1. spark from engine 1, defective copper 1. backfire 1, matches 1, unknown 2. All plant is _in good order. The staff is one short owing to the recent accident to Fireman M'Donnell. Two others who were off duty through accidents have resumed work. The pressure at the various stations has been as follows: —South Dunedin: 9 a.m., 991 b; 9 p.m., 1201,b. Central: 0 a.m., 951 b; 9 p.m., 1401 b. Roslyn, 9 a.m., 901 b; 9 p.m., 1201 b. The ambulance travelled 707 miles and transported 68 patients. The report was adopted.
