Lieutenant-colonel John Pawson, who on the occasion of his ninety-fifth birthday last year received a signed photograph from the King together with congratulations on being “ the oldest living gunner,” has died at his home at Plumstead, Kent. He would have been 96 on February 1, and it was only a week before his death that he had his first tooth extracted. Colonel Pawson enlisted as a trumpeter in 1849, and was present at the Battle of Balaclava and the siege of Sebaetopool, in the Crimean campaign. At the age of 77 he volunteered for war work, and became quartermaster of the Auxiliary Horse Depot at Woolwich. Before long a robot aeroplane may be able to carry one from Land’s End to Aberdeen or Ultima Thule without human pilotage.
