I have been fortunate so far in managing to solve them, but am apt to crash at any time now.” Quite ‘a number of our solvers are beginners, and have had practically no experience of three-movers. We therefore are being very careful to select simple and suitable problems. In this way we hope to educate them up so that when later we give more complicated positions they will not find them more difficult. This object will not be obtained if at this stage the practice at the simple type of three-movers is broken. We trust that “ Rook ” will not crash for some time yet, but we promise that before the competition ends that some problems will be sufficiently difficult to make each of the competitors crash at least once or twice. We believe that this will add Interest to the competition, and, besides, will remove the likelihood of several tleing for first place—as happened with out previous competition. We wish to thank Mr Balk for kindly forwarding to us his collection of miniature throe-movers. We Intend to select a number for our competition. Mr J. Yates, of Greymouth, has composed a two-move problem which he has kindly given us permission to publish. This we Intend to do next week, making it one of the competition problems. Mr Yates is not competing as a solver In this competition, but we acknowledge his solutions as received along with those from other solvers. , GAMES. A good game by Bogoljubow at the Veldes tournament: — (Indian Defence.)

(a) The usual move, P to B 4, Is preferable. (b) Beginning an attack on the Queen s side, which results in the weakening of his Pawn position. Development by Q Kt to Q 2 is preferable. (c) After 13. . ,P takes P; 14. Kt takes R P. Black's Queen’s side Pawns are very weak. (d) An alternative here is 20. R to Q 4,threatening 21. Kt to R 6, ch, P takes Kt; 22. R to Kt 4, ch. l.f, in reply, 20. . .Kt to K B 3, then 21. Kt takes P. Black can, however, play 20. . .R takes R, e.g., 20. . .R takes R; 21. Kt to K 7, oh, Q takes Kt (if 21. . .K to R sq, then 22. Kt to Kt 6, ch, R P takes Kt; 23. Q takes R. ch, and wins) ; 22. Q takes Q, R to Q 2; 23. Q moves, R to Q 7, attacking both Bishops and getting some counter-chances. The text move, by guarding one of the Bishops, threatens R to Q 4, and Black has no satisfactory reply. (0) The remaining moves were 25. Q R to B sq, Kt to K 3 ; 26. Kt to K 7, ch, K‘ to R sq; 27. Kt to B 6, P to Kt 6; 28. Kt takes P, P to Kt 7; 29. ft to Q Kt sq, ft to Q Kt so; 30. R to Q 6, Kt to B 4; 31. Kt to B 6. Kt to Q 6, ch; 32. K to Kt 3, ft to R sq ; 33. Kt to Kt 4, Kt takes Kt; 34. R takes P, Resigns (if Kt to Q 6, then R takes B). The following game was played at the master tourney at Swincmunde: —
(King’s Gambit.) White. Black. J. Stoltz. L, Rellstab, 1. P to K 4 P to K 4 2. P to K B 4 P takes P 3. Kt trf K B 3 Kt to K B 3 (a) 4. Kt to B 3 P to Q 4 5. P takes P Kt takes P 6. 20. R to Q 7 R to K Kt 1 21. B to Q 6, ch Resigns. (a) Spiclinann has expressed the view that this gives Black the advantage, but this Is very doubtful. (b) B to K 2, so that 8, B takes P can bo met by Q to K 5, ch, is the generally approved move, (c) Tarrasch, in annotating a game in his match with Tchlgonin, says that if White ventures on this capture Black, by K to Q2, gets a splendid attack. Collijn’s " Larobok,” however, gives the movo as White’s best. Continuing, 9. . .K to Q 2; 10. B to Kt 3, R to K I,' ch; 11. K to B 2 with the better game. (d) Q takes P seems preferable. (e) A surprising move that probably Black did not bargain for. Now it 13. . .R takes P, ch ; 14. K to Kt 1, and Black has two pieces under fire. It 13. . .Kt takes K B P; 14. B to Kt 5, ch! (f) Not 16. . .R to Q I: for then 17. B takes Kt leads to the win of a piece. (gl Or 17. . .P takes B; IS. R to Q 7, E to K Kt 1; 19. K R to Q 1.
