An nroma of mint rock pervades the Bradford Woo] Exchange on market days. No smoking is allowed in the building, and in the early days of its history, merchants took to sacking “humbugs” to compensate them for the absence of tobacco. About 30 years ago four members of the exchange decided to supply their colleagues with “ humbugs ” free of charge—and take a collection among them at Christmas time in aid of Bradford’s poor and needy children. Only one of the original four—Mr Eli Hill—now remains to carry on. Every market day he strolls about the exchange, holding out a large open bag of “humbugs.” He is the most familiar figure on the floor.
