(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, December 17. YOUNG HELPERS’ LEAGUE. On Saturday the annual box-opening of (lie Young Helpers’ League was held at the residence of Mrs J. Mann, the president of the Palmerston branch. The members spent an enjoyable three hours in games and competitions. After tea the birthday cake wa's gut and the boxes were opened. From the 14 boxes £3 2s was collected. OBITUARY. With the passing of Mrs Anna Mat.heson, of Palmerston, is removed- the soli’ remaining survivor of the original settlers at the northern end of Shag Valley district. The deceased was a native of Forfarshire, Scotland, and arrived in the locality in' 1884. Some 42 years ago she, with her late husband, came to live upon their property near Janet’s Peach, purchased from Mr A. D. Bell, where, with the exception of some nine months, she had resided ever since. The deceased was of a genial and kindly disposition, and was much respected by all with whom she came in contact. She was, all her life, a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church, walking with her family in the earlier days some four miles and a-half to attend worship. Her husband predeceased sev some 28 years ago. She is survived by one son, Mr G. D. Matheson. of Palmerston, and one daughter Mrs G. Goddes, of Hampden.
