SCHOOL VACATIONS

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING PORT CHALMERS The customary ceremony in connection with the break-up of the Port Chalmers School was held yesterday afternoon under ideal conditions. There was a large attendance of parents and friends, and the various speakers received an attentive hearing. The children assembled in the school ground, and no better setting tor such a function could have been provided, scholars and visitors basking in the brigat sunshine. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr J; D. Morgan) presided, and in the course of his remarks congratulated the children on the progress made during the past year, and referred to the splendid work accomplished by the headmaster (Mr D. Forsyth) and the teachers. Among those present were the Mayor (Mr John Watson) and Mrs Watson and the ministers of the various churches. Special interest was taken in the presentation of the dux medal and sports cup. The latter was won by the school bantam Rugby football team in competition with the Dunedin school teams. In presenting the cup Mr A. Hanna (president of the Public Schools Sports’ Association) congratulated the team on its good all-round play during last season. The headmaster referred to the school work of the' past year, and mentioned that the splendid progress made was due, in a very large measure, to the loyal and efficient assistance given by the teachers and the dose attention given by the pupils to their studies. The prizes were presented by the Rev. G. Dunn (infant room), the Rev. T. Flower (Standards I and II), the Rev. T. A. Pybus (Standard lll'i the Rev. W. M. Grant (Standard IV), and the Rev. W. R. Roberts (Standards V and VI).
