POSSESSION OF OPIUM
CHINESE FRUITERER FINED. (Per Uxitep Press .\ssociiiTiOK.) AUCKLAND, December IS. A Chinese fruiterer named Allim Lum On, aged 32. appeared in the Police Court to-day charged with unlawfully having in his possession 21 packets of prepared opium. , ' : v : ' Detective Sergeant Kelly said the accused would not disclose where the drug was obtained. A bank book-in the possession of the accused, who.was deiscribed by Mr M‘Hugh as a distributor of opium, showed a credit of £BO. Answering Mr Kelly, the > licensed denied that the bank book was in'connection with an opium “ trust.” .He said the money belonged to his brother who was a carrier. “He makes more money than most carriers,” stated the magistrate. The accused was fined £SO, in default three months’ imprisonment.
