RED CROSS GARDEN FETE

FUNCTION AT MONTECILLO HOME, Under the auspices of the Red Cross Society a garden fete was held on Saturday afternoon in the Montecillo Home grounds. The object was to give the soldier-patients an opportunity to dispose of articles of their handiwork, all the proceeds going to the men who made the goods. The cause being so worthy, it was not surprising to find a large attendance of the public, who bought liberally at the moderate prices placed on all the goods. There were hundreds of samples on exhibition, including wicker baskets, tea cosies, purses, handbags, coat hangers, toast racks, and cane trays. This stall was under the supervision of Miss Miller, the vocational instructress. The junior Red Cross assisted at the flower stall, under Miss Kilpatrick, and the sweets and ice cream department was in charge of Miss Lake. The men, ail of whom were hearty and smiling notwithstanding their disabilities, made excellent salesmen. The band of the Ist Battalion was present, and played acceptable music under the direction of Lieutenant Asten. The function was opened by Dean Cruickshank in a few appropriate sentences, in which, as a “ digger ” himself, he expressed his sympathy with all those who were maimed, and, on their behalf asked for the generous patronage of the public at the annual disposal of their various specimens of handiwork.
