MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING ‘ The monthly meeting of the Maniototo County Council was held in the County Chambers, Naeeby, last Wednesday, and was attended by Crs Robert Scott (chairman), W. Howell, H. W. Davis, Edward Morgan. Neil Nicolson. T. A. Lowis, W. M. Matneweon, Peter Aitken, and Thomas Hall. Frank Horc, Naseby, wrote complaining of the treatment accorded a heifer of his which had been impounded;—After hearing the county poundkeeper's explanation it was resolved that the complaint should lie on the table. The Commissioner of Unemployment wrote forwarding particulars relative to scheme No. 11, rabbit destruction, and intimating that the necessary forms for use in connection with this scheme were not yet quite completed, but supplies would be despatched to the certifying officers when ready.—lt was decided that copies of the particulars of the scheme be made available to councillors, and that the clerk communicate further with the commissioner regarding this scheme. The Waihemo County # Council wrote acknowledging and accepting the offer of the Maniototo County Council to cooperate with the Waihemo County in the clearing of snow from the Pigroot section of the Palmerston-Queenstown highway.—Received. . . _ The medical officer of health, Dunedin, wrote that the department had now been authorised to make a reduction of 10 per cent, in the contribution made by local authorities towards the salaries and expenses of departmental health inspectors, the reduction to date from April 1 last. —Appreciation was expressed of the Government’s action. . The secretary of the Maniototo A. and P. Association wrote requesting a refund of rates paid on the Ranfurly Hall for the year ended March 31. —The letter was received. _ , The Kairanga County Council, Palmerston North, wrote asking if this council were favourable to the Dog Registration Act being amended so that power be granted to local bodies to charge a maximum fee of £2, and that it be left to the County Council’s discretion to decide as to what class of dogs the maximum fee should apply.—Received.

Mra H. Weir (Waipiata) wrote asking if the council had any objections .to her erecting a small advertising notice on the road, line near the Waipiata Sanatorium. —The matter was discussed, and waa.left to Cr Howell to make further inquiries and to report to next meeting. The secretary of the Waipiata Cricket and Lawn Tennis Clubs asked for permission to take 100 yards of sand from Waipiata cutting for improving the cricket pitch and lawn tennis courts.—lt was decided that the request be granted provided that road line is left in a condition to the satisfaction of the countj engineer. ■ . . Mr F. J. Hore applied for permission to erect gates across roads.—Cr Davis stated that he had been informed that gates had been erected across one road, and the work did not conform to the con--, ditions as laid down by the Act. ihe engineer was directed to inspect and to take any steps necessary to rectify matters and to report to next meeting. Accounts amounting to £1132 6s 4d were passed for payment. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer (Mr R. J. Black) reported as follows: Highways.—St. Bathans loop: The section between the Manuhenkia and oliagLauder junction was graded. Surfacing and gravelling repairs were carried out on the Cambrian-St. Bathans section. Palmerston-Queenstown: Grading and scarifying were carried out from the bt. Bathans loop junction to Ran fur y loop (18 miles). On Hills Creek bridge the deck spacing was closed and runner planks added. To the Weddcrburn bridge runner planks were added. The broken railings at Idaburu overbridge were repaired. Gravelling repairs we y e carried out on the Shag, Kyeburn, and Wedderburn sections and light dressing of gravel applied between Idaburn bridge and Mo. 4 junction. Idaburn-Moa Creek; Gravelling repairs were carried out near Spain s bridge and the bridge approaches dressed up. Waipiata-Styx: Gravelling, repairs were carried out between Waipiata and Howell’s Creek and a corner on this sect tion improved under No. 5 scheme, ine crossings below, the. sanatorium were m fairly bad order this month through the addition of-mine tailings. The creek has now reached a definite line across the reSe KyebuVi? e repairs were carried out on the Waipiata-Kyeburn road. Under No. 5 scheme corners were further improved near the plantation on the Ranfurly-Naseby road, and creek drams cleared at Ranfurly. About *0 cubic vards of gravel were spread in Kantuiiy and the town dump fence and rubbish th> squared up. Road drainage was carded out under No. 5 scheme on Barneys lane unformed section below Ran fur y. The two low sections are now drained to crossings where culverts are required and several small depressions require filling to make (passable. Three days power grader and one day’s lorry work would then meet requirements for farm access. - Gimmerburn Riding. Gravelling pairs were carried out on the Lower Gimm Lauder hiding.— Material for ,13-inch culvert were placed on T, Pauley » road. Gravelling repairs were carried out,near Sh St. be ßath^ns t ’ Riding.—Gravelling repairs were carried out on Ida i alley railway road. Drainage repairs were completed or* A. Thurlows road. A 12inch diameter culvert was placed, and the necessary ditching done on Auripo road. Creek crossings were filled and improved on this road and gravel repairs and water tables attended to on M'Nally’s road.; Idaburn Riding.— Gravelling repairs were done on Agnew’s road. Tenders are called for Reefs road gravelling. . Hyde Riding.—Under No. 5 scheme the dangerous corners between Hyde township and the railway road were cut back and the road canted. Widening of the shaded sidling near Dowling’s Creek is in progress. A nine-inch, culvert requires extension at this- point to conform to new work. Corners were improved on the Waipiata-Kokonga road near ithe Dip Hill. Two small culverts 09 Capburq Hill will be placed this coming month. Surfacing was carried out on the HydeKokonga road. Serpentine Riding.—Gravelling repairs and surfacing were carried out on the Paerau Runs road and the Blackball road. , ' Puketoi Riding.—Gravel repairs were carried out on Sharkey’s road and near J. Kerr’s. An application has been received for spring grading on Gibson’s road. The report was adopted.
