SUPPLIES FROM IRELAND
EFFECT OF DUTIES ENGLAND WILL NOT SUFFER. (From Our Own Correspondent.) • ' '-■ LONDON, July 19. It is pointed out in the Weekly Dairy Produce Notes of the Empire Marketing Bpard that it is not likely that any butter shortage will be caused by the operation of the 20 per cent, duty on Irish butter. There are ample supplies of butter in store in the United Kingdom or afloat on its way here. From New Zealand and. Australia 244,000 cwt are on their way, as compared with 183,000 cwt this time last year. The amount of butter in store in the United Kingdom is 412,000cwts, against 398,000 cwt last year. Butter immediately in sight, including both that iff store and afloat from all sources, totals 6G5,500cwt, as compared with 583,700 cwt this time last year.. This is more than six times, the 102,273ewt received from the Irish Free State during the six months ended June 30. .Imports from Denmark ai;e also expected to increase. In regard to the other commodities from the Irish Free State a correspondent of the Manchester Guardian points out that for a long time supplies of Irish bacon and eggs have not been big enough to have any material influence on the general position. English baconcurers will benefit to some extent as a result, of the duty on Irish bacon, but only if they can induce farmers to breed pigs in sufficient quantity and of the right kind. In the main we depend on Denmark and the Scandinavian countries for bacon, and the commodity is quite cheap. " Ample supplies of cheap eggs are also assured from Denmark, South Africa, and Australia, while. Canada and Argentina can between them make up the° supplies of livestock which usually come from the Free State. Therefore a complete failure of Irish supplies of dairy products, will make little or no difference to this country, as alternative supplies are vast and cheap.*'
