WAGES OF SHEARERS

THE CANTERBURY DISTRICT FAILURE TO REACH AGREEMENT. (Pf.i: United Puess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 29. The rates of pay for shearers and shed hands were considered at a meeting of the Conciliation Council to-day. No agreement was reached, and a motion to refer the dispute to the Arbitration Court was defeated. The employers offered 15s per 100 for shearing with provision for a sliding scale, so that if wool reached the 1027-28 values the wage would be 30s. The union asked for 21s. The Clerk of Awards will now be advised that no agreement has been reached, and the existing agreements will lapse after 30 days unless a settlement for a Dominion agreement is reached at the sittings to be held at Blenheim and Dunediu.
