WIRELESS RECEIVERS
HIGH COST IN AUSTRALIA AMAZEMENT EXPRESSED. SYDNEY, August 29. (Received August 30, at 0.20 a.m.) Members of the Tariff Board, to-day expressed amazement at the high cost of wireless receivers in Australia compared with prices in America. Evidence was given that a six-valve receiver which was being retailed in America at about £7 10s cost £37 10s in Sydney, and' a four-valve all-electric set which was retailed in Sydney at £l7 17s could be purchased in America at about 325. Mr Grime, of Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., explained in defence of the protective duties that the Australian radio industry had developed wonderfully since American radio goods were kept out, while Australian workmanship was equal to the best in the world. An attempt had been made to secure a market in New Zealand, but with little success, owing to the severe competition of the cheaper American receivers, which were made by mass production.
