TAIERI RIVER TRUST

MONTHLY MEETING The Taieri River Trust . held its monthly meeting at Mosgiel yesterday. Mr T. M. Ball was. chairman and Crs R. A. Kempshell, A. Moore, R. T. Sadd, F. Johnson and G. Lyall were present. An apology for absence was received from Cr. J'. M'Kenzie. REPORTS. The trust's inspector reported as follows for the month: —The deepening of Doull's drain (Centre road) had been finished (20 chains). The following drains had also been, deepened —" B " drain from Poplar road dram to Centre road (30 chains), 05 chains of the drain through Home's property from " B " to "C" drain, and 65 chains of the drain from " B " to " C " drain on Centre road. Thirty chains of the drain from Scott's to Maungatua drain had been • mown, also 20 chains of Poplar drain at Crossan's. The gang tinder Mr Marshall had deepened Otokia drain from Kirk's drain to Matheson's (62 chains). The pipes at Carruther's and at Centre road county hut had been lowered. Twenty chains of the new drain at Nimmo's and 30 chains of Bathgate's drain had been cleaned. The grass had been cleaned for two. miles nine chains out of Kirk's drain from Otokia to Momona road. The work in hand consisted in cleaning Patrick's drain.—Adopted. The' Works Committee reported as follows:—The Dunedin City Corporation was carrying out repairs to prevent erosion of the banks of the Waipori River. With regard to the drainage of Mr J. M'Fadzien's property, an arrange ment had been entered into with Mr H. G. Home to the effect that the drainage from the former's land be taken through the latter's property, provided Mr M'Fadzien purchased the necessary crossing pipes. In connection with the Works Committee, Cr F. Johnson moved that the cleaning of Duck creek be undertaken immediately. to give drainage to Mr W. Baird and other settlers in the vicinity of Momona. This was agreed to, but it was decided that the present schedule of works in hand be completed before this work was undertaken. The committee reported having inspected Loch Katrine drain at the properties of Messrs W. Bruce and F. Johnson and recommended that the drain be fenced. This decision was deferred, for one month. The following recommendations were adopted:—That the pipes across Momona-Allanton road be lowered as requested by Mr P. G. Ford and Mrs E. E. Ford and that the drain at the county hut to the boundary of Mrs E. J. Walker's be cleaned and an outlet given to the latter's land drainage.—Adopted, CORRESPONDENCE. ■.'.! The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote notifying that the term decided on between the City Council and the trust for employment of relief workers by the trust had expired, and that the council could not continue under present arrangements.—lt was decided to continue with two bus loads of relief workers on the basis suggested by the City Council in the letter, the position to be reviewed in two months'time.

A. Wilson, Henley, wrote asking for better drainage, and that an opening.be made into the weir channel.^—The Works Committee was appointed to arrange for the execution of the work at the first convenient, opportunity. ;' Allan Mann and C. Harris, Maungatua, also wrote asking that the drain between their properties be cleared.— Referred to>the Works Committee.'

C. Reid, Henley, forwarded a letter asking that a box be put in immediately in the drain to the: Lee Creek coming from his property.—Work to be undertaken as requested, provided the writer' would bear the. cost of the timber for the box or the pipes, whichever would be required. ,T...G. Paulin, P. Dow, H. G. Barron, and J. Colquhoun wrote to the trust asking for drainage relief (a) from the ditch between H. Barron's and Paulin's, which needed repairing, and (b) that the level of the --ater in Duck Creek from Paulin's corner towards Shand's be lowered.—The writers to be advised that the trust will give the matter attention as soon as the programme of work in hand permitted. The National Mortgage and Agency Company wrote with regard to a client's rates for 1932, and asking that the penalty for overdue rates be. remitted. —lt -was decided that,. in view of the special circumstances" of the case arid also that the year's rates had already been paid for, the penalty be remitted for 1932.

The x engineer-in-chief, Wellington, and the district engineer, Public Works De; partment, Diinedin> wrote in connection with the commission appointed to inquire into the position of the trust's indebtedness to the Crown for repayment of the loan for protective works.—lt was decided to instruct the trust's solicitors to engage counsel and to attend to the presentation of evidence before the commission. - ,-. GENERAL. The secretary was empowered to disclose any information . required in connection with the classification. The chairman (Cr T. M. Ball) and Cr Sadd were authorised to sign the rate books. '■■-. ; Accounts amounting to £286 8s lid were passed for payment. The Works Committee was authorised to make arrangements for the dragline excavator to proceed immediately with the clearing of the Upper Contour channel.

It was" decided to have the road to the pumping station attended to as soon as possible.
