DOMINION TOURNAMENT OTAGO WINS CHAMPIONSHIP AN UNBEATEN RECORD (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, August 27. The New Zealand basket ball tournament was concluded to-day, the weather breaking shortly after mid-day and heavy rain setting in, with the result that the afternoon games had to be played indoors. Otago won the New Zealand Cup, going through the tournament unbeaten, and Wellington, who were defeated only once, won the Annie Brown Cnp for the runnersup 'Ashburton takes the Presidents Shield for the team from a minor association winning most points. Tlie match between the North and South Islands was won by the North by 22 goals to 19 after an exciting contest, ine ioilowing are the results of to-day s play. Auckland 22 beat Marlborough 15, Southland 15 beat Hawke’s Bay 9. Otago 13 heat Canterbury 12. Wellington 38 heat Ashburton 8. Otago 17 beat Southland 15. Wellington 22 beat Auckland 19. Marlborough played a strong game against Auckland, who ■ experienced difficulty in securing good combination and effected a change in the team after half time. The scoring was even at halt time and it was not until the closing stages of the game that Auckland really had a reliable working combination The opening stages of the SouthlandHawke’s Bay game were ragged, the passing of both teams being haphazard, ihc scoring was even, hut when Southland settled to their game they held HawkeBay, who must have been feeling the effects of the challenge match against Ashburton at 9,30 a.m. _ . , The game between Otago and Canterbury was very keenly contested and willing, with Canterbury attacking strongly trom the first whistle and making a bold bid for victory. Otago were not quite up to the form displayed in their game against Wellington, the forwards in particular being very erratic in the opening stages of the game. Excitement was at fever pitch within four minutes of time, when the score was 12—12. Otago’s splendid defence, however, presented a solid tront to all Canterbury’s attacks. Ashburton offered only spasmodic opposition to Wellington, whose combination and goal shooting were excellent. Otago and Southland battled all the way, Otago winning by 17 goals to 15 in the last few minutes of the game. Both teams played fast and spectacular basket ball, the passing and catching being a treat to watch. At one stage it looked as Though Southland would win, but Otago rallied and increased their lead. The game was one of the most ekciting of the tournament. . , The game between Wellington and Auckland was sternly contested. Wellington winning by 22 goals to 19. Halfway through the second spell Auckland were well down, and then they commenced to pull up, but time was called, leaving them losers by a margin of three goals. The last few minutes were exciting, Auckland striking their real form. . The game between the North and the South Islands/was one of the most exciting of the day. North Island won by 22 goals to 19, but only after a . hard struggle, especially in the concluding stages. The sides combined better than was expected, with the result that fast passing movements were started whenever possible. Every time the ball entered the goal there'was a terrific struggle between the opposing forwards and the defenders. The teams were:— North Island.—Forwards —J. Nagle (Auckland), E. Bowman (Auckland).
