OTAGO HUNT MEETING.

INTERESTING RACING CUP TO HEATHER LAD The Otago Hunt Club's annual race meeting took place at Wingatui on Saturday in fine weather. It was somewhat dull and threatening during the forenoon, but rain did not fall until some time after the racing had concluded. Thhre wig quite • good attendance despite the doubtful nature of the weather, and the card provided soma interesting sport. The going was- very sticky and holding and several horses did not appear to be able to act on the ground and consequently ran below expectations. Speculation was fairly brisk, and the investments, despite some large dividends and the downfall of favourites, showed a considerable increase on last year’s figures. Rameses was taken out of the Sea View Hurdles. Morena started favourite in a fairly good betting race. Silver Salver and Hard Prince took up the running, and Red Leaf ran off 1 at the first hurdle. Silver Salver went to the front after leaving the straight and |ed ( to the far turn, where Morena and Nine of Spades both threatened danger. Ship Shape fell at the second last hurdle. Although Morena and Nine of Spades closed on the leader when nearing the last hurdle Silver Salver had too much pace and came on to win by over two lengths. Morena was easing up in third place. The winner put up a good display for a horse making a first appearance over hurdles and should . improve considerably with more experience. He was well handled by R. Beale, whose riding over hurdles and fances has brought him into the front rank amongst the best horsemen in the country. » Dinner Bell and Anthum were struck out of the Brockville Trotting Handicap. Gold Era, Quita, Ayrshire and Alpha Wrack soon formed the leading division and Love Parade broke badly after racing up to the leaders in a little over, a furlong. v Quita led along the back and into the straight, where Alpha Wrack put in a claim hut stopped, and Quita came away to win by about eight lengths. Love Parade broke again at the far turn, and the failure to maintain an even gait spoilt a good chance of winning. Indicate was the only one to drop out of the President's Handicap. Arden’s Beauty finished up a better favourite than Shamfight. They went away from a fair line, hut Shock was badly left. Arden’s Beauty soon opened up a good lead, and Fine Weather appeared to get knocked hack. Arden’s Beauty had opened up a four lengths’ lead from Prince Tractor and Shamfight at the end of two furlongs, and looked unbeatable. Once inside the distance Prince Tractor got to the leader, who commenced to stop, and suffered defeat by a short length. Shamfight, who appeared to he anchored by the going, was a moderate third. Traeaono after losing position in the early part of the race drew up and finished fourth.

Oriflamb’s name had the pen put through it for the Otago Hunt Cup. There was a close call for favouritism between Sir Richard and. Deportment, and they finished with only £3 10s between them. There was not much pace on in the early stages, and lack of it seemed to make Sir Richard lose' ground at his jumps. Zeehan tailed off before completing a circuit. When jumping the fence at the seven-furlong post Heather Lad and Sir Richard were racing a couple of lengths in front of Deportment and Radipus Rod. Heather Lad and Sir Richard raced together to the water jump, and the latter jumped a bit short and hooked the bank. This left Heather Lad well clear, and he came on to win comfortably by six lengths from Sir Richard, who beat Deportment in a fighting finish by four lengths. Radius Rod was about a dozen lengths further back. Water Power started an £O7 better favourite than Last March in the Tallyho Handicap, and Master Anomaly was a food third fancy, but when it came to usiness Water Power was the only one staying on at the finiah. She was always handy to Master Anomaly, Blue Metal, and Last March, who made the early riming. Water Power was kept waiting until reaching the straight, where she drew to the front and strode home an easy winner. Master Anomaly stopped after, going six furlongs and Lord Argosy made up gtound to finish third. All on the card went out for the Hunters’ Flat Handicap, in which the riders endeavoured to make the journey as short as possible by hanging on to their mounts for the first half of the distance. This suited Fair Exchange, who had too much speed for the others. Dinner Bell and Rhodamine dropped out of the Wingatui Trot. ‘ Sansaveno established a good lead, and when Little Claire got to him 100 yards from home and had the race won she-tangled and suffered defeat. _ _ . . The card concluded with Palantua being elected a sound favourite for the Vauxhall Handicap, and she comfortably measured off Arden’s Beauty, who stayed on better than in her first race. The management of the meeting under the secretaryship of Mr C. R. Caffin. leit nothing to be desired, and the various officials lent valuable assistance towards making the meeting a success. Mr L. G. Hill acted as honorary judge, and gave prompt decisions, and Mr A. D. M Ivor had the various fields in fair line at the rise of the barrier. _ , The totalisator handled £BBIB 10s during the day, compared with £6067 for last year’s meeting.
