4YA WAVE LENGTH

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —“Listener” evidently misconstrued my letter which appeared in the Daily Times of the 21th inst. I did not particularly urge a return to the old wave length, but said there were better positions than both the present and the former. I suspect that “Listener” is a Dunedin listener. It is natural that listeners close up to 4YA should experience no interference from Hobart. “ Listener ” does not display a generous spirit by suggesting that, because he receives 4YA well, more djstant listeners should be deprived of the pleasure of a clear and uninterrupted reception of their nearest YA station.

Being a lover of good music, I am not enamoured of the programmes broadcast by KFI. Nevertheless, I do not think that those who like KFI programmes should be prevented from hearing them under the best conditions, and I think this could be kept in view if an entirely new wave length were selected. I think investigations should be made by the Broadcasting Board with a view to improving present conditions. Such an investigation would convince the board of the injustice being done to listeners remote from Dunedin. In South Otago the nuisance is so acute that strong representations are likely to be made soon to the Broadcasting Board. It is not just that license holders should be deprived of the right to hear their chief station under the most favourable conditions, possible. — I am, etc.,- South Otaoo. Balclutha. August 25. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —With reference to the letters signed “ South Otago ” and “ Listener ” regarding the 4YA wave length, allow me to say that I have not been able to enjoy an evening programme from 4YA since the wave length was altered. The interference is caused by 2CO, Corowa, the position of which is almost identical with that of 4YA on the dial. When 4YA •was in its former position I was able to bring in KFI without interference from 4YA and vice versa, but now the position is that in the silences between the 4YA items it is possible to hear 2CO across a large room without any alteration of the dial. The 4YA station is not for the sole convenience of license holders of Dunedin and suburbs, but has to serve a great body of listeners from the Waitaki to Stewart Island. The listeners in the whole of this district depend on Dunedin for the major portion of their programmes, but reception is impossible with 4YA on its present wave length. Petitions have been circulated and signed in Dunedin by interested parties, but these petitions falsely represent the position, and were a plebiscite taken of all listeners in Otago and Southland the 4YA wave length would be returned to its former position. The board is lacking in its duty in altering the wave length for the duration of the Olympic Games broadcast and continuing the same wave length after the Games are finished. Why? Is this one of the many cases where the majority have to suffer for the convenience of the favoured few'?—l am, etc.,' Eight Valves. Oamaru, August 25.
