BASKET BALL

DOMINION TOURNAMENT OTAGO DEFEATS MARLBOROUGH. (Special to Daily Times.) INVERCARGILL, August 26. In the basket ball match between Otago and Marlborough Otago were playing with a slightly changed team, Miss R. Sunderland standing down in the defence third and Mrs Bartlett in the forward third. Otygo attacked strongly in the early stages of the game, and from some clever movements a number of goals in rapid succession until the score stood at 4 —o in their favour. Marlborough then came away with a good passing movement, and opened the score on their account. Otago, however, were playing a splendid game, carrying the play with rapid movements to their opponent’s goal and finishing off with some well-aimed goals. The score rose steadily in their favour, Miss N. Benzoni, in the forward third, putting in some excellent field work and some accurate goaling. In Otago’s centre third Miss E. Campbell was prominent, and on defence Miss G. Thompson was the best of a good three. The halftime score was called with the score 21—3 in favour of Otago. The second half began in spirited fashion, with the Otago players still on the top of their form. Marlborough, however, were putting up a determined resistance, and indulged in some pretty movements, from which scores resulted. However, Otago were right on their game with the forwards playing spectacular basket ball. Miss N. Benzoni, in particular, was getting in some marvellous leaps. The final score was 40—11 in favour of Otago. Other results were as follow: — Hawke’s Bay 22, Marlborough 17. ! Southland 23, Ashburton 0. Wellington 39, South Canterbury 8. Southland 13, Auckland 11. Wellington 24, Hawke’s Bay 15. THE CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS. (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, August 20.
