EAST AFRICA
QUESTION OF CLOSER UNION . TRE REPORT PUBLISHED. '/ (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Angus* 25.' (Received August 26, at 5.5 p.m.) The correspondence between the Colonial Office and the Governors of Kenya, Tanganyika, Nyassaland, Northern Rhodesia and the British Resident in Zanzibar concerning the report on closer union in East Africa has been published. On the main issue the committee had advised that it was not the time for far reaching steps in the direction of political or constitutional union. It recommended, however, that a Governors’ conference should be used to ensure continuance of effective co-operation in regard to matters of common interest in East Africa. Letters expressing the views of the Governors are followed by a despatch from the Colonial Secretary, in which Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister accepts the committee’s view on the main issues. The importance of effective co-operation in regard to transport matters and communications generally and in matters of research is emphasised, and the despatch states that it would be the duty of the conference of Governors to ensure maintenance of such co-operation.
