“A DEPLORABLE ROAD”

TO THE ElilTOB. Sib, —Like J. A. R., who wrote in last Saturday’s issue, I am glad that someone at last has drawn attention to the deplorable state of the Saddle Hill-Scrogg’s Hill road, and I desire to thank ‘ Sympathiser” for the sympathy extended to us. It is 30 years or more since anything was done to the road that more thamjustifies the description, “deplorable.” In vain we, on “the worst road in the country,” ask for relief from the slush, mud, and rutp—relief, too, from having our Sunday’s peace and quiet broken by calls for assistance from bemired motorists, as with man and horse power and the trusty wire strainer we fight a never-ending fight against mud and skidding wheels. These facts can be vouched for by several of the leading business and professional men in Dunedin, who, forsaking the beaten track with a desire perhaps to enjoy the panoramic view of Taieri Plains which a drive round' Saddle Hill affords, have very soon found themselves in difficulties. Perhaps some of them, when they, read this letter, will come forward and tell the Taieri County Council, in King’s English if possible, their opinion of this road.—l am, etc., Resident.
